RFID A1

The RFID A1 module is the first in an evolving family of 13.56MHz sub assemblies from Eccel Technology Ltd (IB Technology). The product is designed with embedded applications in mind, where the user wishes to easily add RFID capability to his design without requiring the time and RFID expert knowledge to develop this high performance solution from an individual component and embedded software level. An on board low power ARM microcontroller handles the RFID configuration setup and provides the user with a powerful yet simple command interface to facilitate fast and easy read/write access to the memory and features of the various transponders supported by this module. 14 different ISO14443A protocol transponder types are supported by this module. DESFire and Mifare PLUS cards are supported for serial number acquisition only. Interface to the RFID A1 module is via either SPI for fastest possible speed, at up to a maximum clock frequency of 500 kHz, or for the minimum number of connections there is an I2C slave port provided. The guiding values of the RFID A1 design have been:

  • Fully supports read/write to Mifare1k, Mifare4k, Ntag21x, Ultralight.  Supports serial number (UID) read only of other ISO14443 based transponders such as DESfire, Mifare Plus etc.
  • Low power consumption. The lowest power down mode consumes typically  20nA (nano amps).
  • Small footprint. This enables the RFID A1 module to be placed on the user’s circuit board just like any other surface mount component. The package is just over 20mm x 20mm in size, with castellated edges to enable easy surface mount soldering of the module to the user’s printed circuit board.
  • High transponder read/write speed. For example, the whole 1K byte memory of a Mifare1K classic transponder can be written to in under 0.6 seconds and read in under 0.5 seconds.
  • Powerful encryption. The module provides the option to encrypt and decrypt tag data using the AES128 CBC encryption algorithm, with multiple encrypt/ decrypt key storage and selection options.
  • Low cost. The module simply requires a 3.3V power and GND connection from the user pcb, along with two connections to an antenna. Eccel Technology Ltd (IB Technology) provide a range of suitable antennas designed for use with this module.

RFID A1MT (Multiple Tag)

The A1MT (Multiple Tag) module is a variation of the A1 module, however it contains 3 additionally implemented commands that enable the reading of several tags at a time. These commands scan for all tags within the antenna range and enumerate their UIDs in the Data Buffer. The A1MT footprint is identical to that of the A1 module.

RFID B1


The RFID B1 is a close relative of the RFID A1 sub assembly module from Eccel Technology Ltd (IB Technology).  The product is designed like the RFID A1 for embedded applications, where the user wishes to easily add RFID capability to his design without requiring the time and RFID expert knowledge to develop this high performance solution starting from scratch from an individual component and embedded software level.  In addition to it’s suitability for embedded designs, it is also highly suitable for integration into a PC or PLC based system, due to the UART interface provided. Furthermore, there are a range of peripherals on the module such as comparator, DAC/PWM and digital IO that are available to the user and configured and accessed by specific commands and control/status registers. DESFire and Mifare PLUS cards are supported for serial number acquisition only.

The command interface is powerful and yet simple and all features and peripherals are accessed as simple memory based devices using these commands and dedicated control and status registers in memory on the module. 128 bit AES encryption of data storage and transmission are also offered, as well as raw serial and serial plus 16 bit CRC communication options.

The guiding values of the RFID-B1 design have been:

  • Fully supports read/write to Mifare1k, Mifare4k, Ntag21x, Ultralight.  Supports serial number (UID) read only of other ISO14443 based transponders such as DESfire, Mifare Plus etc.

RWD-QT-LP-SMT

The RWD-QT-LP-SMT is a new surface mount (SMT) package option of the RWD-QT-LP module.  Like the dual in line (DIL) module, it supports HitagS256, HitagS2048, Hitag1, Hitag2 and EM4XXX transponders at 125KHz.

It is designed for modern printed circuit board surface mount assembly and minimal size requirements.

Evaluation and development is covered by a baseboard product (RWD-QT-SMT-Baseboard - Eccel Stock Code 000325). This baseboard offers a USB connection interface capability to the module and expansion of the pins for circuit development purposes.

OEM MIFARE / ICODE and NFC reader board USB interface

The OEM Reader boards are complete, embedded "Plug-and-Go" RFID read/writers with on-board PCB track antenna, LEDs and RS232 or USB host interfaces. The OEM Reader boards just need a 5-volt supply to be fully featured RFID systems (the USB interface version is powered directly from the USB bus).

The OEM-MIFARE board fully supports Mifare 1k, 4k, Ultralight and contactless read/write to Mifare ProX and SmartMX cards and tags. DESFire and Mifare PLUS cards are supported for serial number acquisition only.

OEM MIFARE / ICODE and NFC reader board RS232 interface

The OEM Reader boards are based on the RWD-MIFARE / ICODE and NFC module designs (and use the same firmware) but have all components laid out on a single PCB. The design incorporates 5-volt supply filtering to ensure optimum performance and an antenna-trimming capacitor to adjust tuning for different environments. In addition, several connector options are provided with all the TTL-level control and communication signals available, as well as RS232 and USB.

The latest version of the OEM-MIFARE / ICODE / NFC firmware (also used on RWD-MIFARE / ICODE / NFC modules) has additional features that allow the automatic output of serial number (UID) or card memory data without any host intervention. Automatic data output can be serial (in different HEX and ASCII formats) or Wiegand protocol. A programmable "BEEP" output is provided to control an audible sounder or other external loads.

The OEM Reader firmware also makes extensive use of power-down and Sleep modes to achieve very low AVERAGE current consumption of down to 100uA (micro Amps), even when fully active. This makes the ib technology reader designs ideal for battery powered applications.
